MADDEN 2002
With incremental improvements over last year's strong version, Madden NFL 2002 is shaping up as more evolutionary than revolutionary. The graphics receive a minor facelift. Players' faces are more detailed, while their bodies are properly proportioned--last year's players appeared too stocky. Hundreds of new player animations allow movement to appear far more fluid and natural. While we didn't get to go through the entire playbook of every team, last year's cheap "money" plays are no longer unstoppable. Although the PlayStation2 version was the furthest in development, the GameCube beta sported the nicest graphics.
Players can practice late-game offense and defense in two-minute drill mode. Create-a-team allows players to start a new franchise, selecting helmets, uniforms, logos, stadiums, and players. Training mode consists of John Madden coaching gamers on the various plays, helping them understand what each X and O in the playbook does. The soundtrack is a good mix of original compositions and a wide variety of recording artists, including Motley Crue, Raekwon, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg.

Fans of extreme-sports games looking for a diversion from Tony Hawk will want to sign up for the road trip in Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, in which you'll join 11 other riders on a tricked-out tear across the U.S.--from Oklahoma City to Hawaii.
But before you can hang with the likes of Mat "The Condor" Hoffman or Ruben "Pollo" Alcantara, it's advisable to practice your chops on the Free Ride or Session modes, especially if you're a newcomer to tricks-based sports games. We spent a good amount of time on Free Ride's open-ended play time to master the complicated sets of controller taps needed to achieve trick points.
The levels that you can ride in either Session or Free Ride depend on what you've unlocked in Road Trip. To get to the next destination, you'll need to complete a set of four challenges not once, but three times (in rookie, semipro, and pro). That can be a daunting challenge, especially for beginners, and for more experienced players it can get a little tedious as you search for the final trick that will push you to the next level. That said, after building some new calluses, we found a satisfying BMX groove and zoomed along on our road trip.
The game also includes several multiplayer options, including HORSE, Tag, Halfpipe Hell, Graffiti War, and Push, where you try to out trick your opponent and make his side of the screen smaller by increasing your side of the screen. Graphically, the game detail is superb--from the bikes and riders to the glitzy lights of the Las Vegas background.

If you're ready for an exciting jungle adventure, grab your loincloth and get swinging. This arcade action game contains 14 challenging levels to conquer, as well as movie clips taken directly from the popular animated Disney film Tarzan. Of course, this game also contains the obligatory Tarzan yell.
While running and swinging from vines and branches, Tarzan tries to collect items scattered throughout the game. The "king of the jungle" can sport several special moves to complete his quest, including a unique ground pound that allows Tarzan to break through objects to reveal secret areas. Strength-building bananas can be consumed for extra power, and Tarzan can also throw spears and knives to defeat his enemies.
While Tarzan's loincloth is ever so lovely, you can also don a dress in this game... to play as Jane, of course. This game certainly scores points for variety. In addition to Tarzan and Jane, there's the friendly ape Terk, and a few other familiar characters--all of which have their own special moves.

TONY HAWK PRO SKATER 3 (MINT)
They say the third time's a charm, but what if everything was done right the first and second time around? That's the hurdle Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 faces, as previous entries in this series are regarded by most gamers as perfect. Difficult as it is to believe, Pro Skater 3 introduces enough new features and great skate parks to make it another must-buy for PlayStation owners.
The biggest addition this time around is the revert, which when combined with the manual introduced in the previous game, lets players string together some amazing vert and grind combos. Once again, every ledge you see in the game is grindable, and the massive levels are packed with switches, hidden areas, and other secrets that will take months to fully explore (and exploit).

TRIPLE PLAY BASEBALL 2001 (some surface scratches, game plays fine)
Triple Play 2001 still includes all the usual options that you've come to expect from a fully licensed baseball game: real teams, real players, real stadiums, and MLB stats. You're given the choice of playing a season, single game, home-run challenge, or the playoffs. Rounding out the game's features is the ability to create and trade players.
The sound effects and music of Triple Play 2001 add a bit of quirkiness and fun to the game. But since this year's game is presented in Dolby Surround, anyone with surround sound will be in for a treat. Sound effects, such as an over-exaggerated crack of the bat and the whoosh of the ball when you connect with a pitch, bounce flawlessly from one speaker to the next. I could have done without the slide whistle that sounds off nearly every time a foul ball is hit into the stands. I really enjoyed the two-man announce team last year, but this year the commentary seems a little drier. The announcing is generally good, though the game does have one or two phrases that are a bit on the amateur side, such as the all encompassing and extremely silly, "Play made!" Comments from the crowd like, "You're in the show, show me something" also add to the baseball atmosphere. But by far the most impressive audio element in the game is the little song excerpt that comes on when a home-team batter steps up to the plate.
Visually, Triple Play 2001 is quite nice. The 3D stadiums are represented fairly accurately and the players look and move real enough. The most impressive visual aspect of the game is its animation. The players run, jump, and dive realistically. The framerate this year has been dramatically improved over last year's Triple Play, and the camera is also pretty sweet. You can set it at three different positions when batting and fielding. But in not-so-key moments (like after you've thrown the ball in from the outfield or when a ball in motion is bound to go foul or over the wall), the camera changes to a dramatic angle. These angles give the game a real broadcast baseball-game look. The angles also show off the game's facial animations: You'll see Mark McGwire jump up and down after he's launched one out of the park, or the mug of the not-so-happy pitcher who served him the fat pitch.
